Four-time world boxing champion Ricky Hatton MBE joins as patron and takes on Mountain Cycle Challenge for Barnabus!
We’re thrilled to announce that Ricky Hatton MBE has become a patron for Barnabus. Ricky has pledged to help raise awareness of our work and will whenever possible offer his support by attending events.
Ricky has also recently astounded us by committing to raise funds for our Brick Appeal by taking part in a gruelling, high altitude, sponsored bike ride on the 20th August, 2014.
Ricky is new to cycling and this will be his first ever mountain climb! He will be taking part in the Pico De Veleta mountain challenge, the highest paved road in Europe. He will face 27 continuous miles of climbing to a final height of over 11,ooo ft. The average gradient of the climb is 7.8% with parts reaching 13%. Add in the hot August weather, the thin air at high altitude and this will be a serious cycling challenge.
'Often, when I'm out in Manchester, I see people sleeping rough and it's really upsetting.Barnabus is a charity close to my heart, I'm patron now and I'm keen to do all I can to help them.
I am trying to help the homeless by cycling up one of Europe's most challenging peaks. The work Barnabus do is incredible, but there's always that little bit more that can be done and I hope everyone digs deep to support me on this cycle ride so they can get the Drop-in extension they deserve.
Originally, I was going to take part in the 140km La Mont Blanc challenge in July, but due to boxing commitments and an injury to one of the boxers travelling with my party, I will now be taking on the Pico de Veleta in Siera Nevada, Spain on August 20th.
When we had to change the ride I wanted to find the biggest, hardest and toughest climb we possibly could. When I heard about the Pico de Veleta, I knew it was the one for us'.
I will be joined by Hatton Promotions' head of boxing Richard Poxon and unbeaten Sheffield prospects Adam Etches and Scott Jenkins, who are all raising funds for the teenage unit at Weston Park Cancer Hospital.
