2 x first time Marathon Runner James Owen completes Paris and Manchester Marathons this April 2012
Update: We met James at our Heaton Park Fun Day and 10k Run with his family last year. He was so moved by our work that he decided to train and run his first ever marathon in Paris. He then heard about the Manchester Marathon and unbelievably decided to enter this too! On the 15th April, 2012 James completed the Paris marathon, despite spraining his ankle on the 21st mile. Two weeks later he completed another gruelling Marathon in Manchester. James also held fundraising events and approached local businesses to gain support. One such business was Pets at Home, they supported James through a 'round up a pound appeal' in their local stores which raised £228.49. We’re so thankful to James for his commitment and enthusiasm to raise much needed funds, which amounted to a staggering £4,305. Thanks too to his family and sponsors for all your support and spurring him on.
We first met James at our Heaton Park Fun Day and Run with his family last year. James ran in our 10k fun run and found out more about us by chatting to the Barnabus team at our various stands and joining in the fun events with his family. Being an avid Manchester United supporter and a fan of Eric Cantona he was going to run the Paris Marathon to raise funds for the homeless charity in Paris of which Eric Cantona is a supporter, 'Abbé Pierre'. However and fortunately for us, he was so moved and inspired by our work that he decided to commit to run his first ever marathon in Paris (the city he used to live and love) to raise much needed funds for the homeless in his home town of Manchester. A little later on in the year during his training he heard about the Manchester Marathon and unbelievably decided to enter this too!
On the 15th April, 2012 he ran his first ever marathon in Paris which James completed even though he sprained his ankle on the 21st mile. Two weeks later on the 29th April, with little time for recovery he completed another gruelling Marathon in Manchester amid punishing torrential rain and a -2 freezing windchill factor.
We've been so inspired and encouraged by James's commitment to running two such challenging events and his tenacious fundraising has known no bounds. We're so thankful to all the friends, family and colleagues that have shown their support in sponsoring and spurring him on.
James also held fundraising events in his own neighbourhood and at church and even approached local businesses to gain support. One such business was Pets at Home , they launched a campaign to support James through a 'round up a pound appeal' in their local stores raising £228.49. James covered all his own travelling and entrant costs so every penny raised will provide a lifeline to the homeless and vulnerable in Manchester.
