MEC Global: Charity Partner 2012 - Smurf Alternative Olympics and Never a Dull Donut

MEC Global chose us as their charity partner in 2012 and provided us with phenomenal support throughout the year. As part of their fundraising support, staff from their London and Manchester offices undertook various sporting challenges; a day of adventurous fundraising, including a group who took to the streets dressed as Smurfs to take part in alternative Olympic challenges; Egg and spoon race over Westminster Bridge; Boris-style bike challenge around Hyde Park; a pedalo race on the Serpentine; sack race down Oxford Street and a final sprint for glory - from Charing Cross to Trafalgar Square, finishing at the Olympic countdown clock.

Other staff raised dough for us through their aptly named 'neveradulldonut' fundraiser by buying and selling donuts through Krispy Kreme's charity fundraising scheme. Staff also volunteered, helping us at our drop-in, store, and charity shop. They collected clothing and came in with donations responding to all our appeals and holding their own as well. They raised a jaw dropping £6,000 through fundraising and incredibly even secured free TV advertising for our “Got Any Spare Change” TV advert over the Christmas period on ITV worth £13,200.

Following on from an inspirational year, we are delighted to confirm that MEC entered a national competition for a 2012 Social Impact Award and won the “SME Business Social” Impact Award.

The Social Impact Awards 2013 are a national awards programme to celebrate and reward excellence in charities, not for profit and social enterprise organisations, as well as public and private sector organisations who have made a ‘Big Difference’ in their communities.

Carol Price, Development Manager, writes;
“Having MEC’s support throughout 2012 was a huge blessing for Barnabus. As well as raising a great sum of money across the year, the team at MEC also supported us by donating their time in a variety of ways, including cooking breakfasts, donating and collecting clothes, gardening and dressing the window in our shop. In addition, the free TV airtime secured on our behalf gave us great exposure and led to an increase in awareness and donations.While the funds raised by MEC are invaluable, the additional commitments of time, effort and the benefit of additional awareness through free advertising offer huge added value to us, and was far beyond what we could have hoped for. Congratulations to all our friends at MEC; we are delighted to hear that your support has been recognized through this award.”
